01 — Starting therapy

How the process works

Beginning therapy can feel like a significant step. The process is intended to be clear, gradual and respectful of your circumstances.

1. Send a short enquiry

Contact me with a brief indication of what brings you to the practice. Please indicate whether you are seeking individual, adolescent, parent, couple or family support.

You do not need to provide detailed medical information or your complete personal history in your first message.

2. Availability and booking

I will respond with available appointment times, the applicable fee and relevant practical information. Enquiries are normally answered Monday to Friday, within two working days.

If I am unable to offer appropriate support, I may suggest alternative services where possible.

3. The initial consultation

The first consultation is an opportunity to discuss what has brought you to therapy, what you hope may become different and any previous support you have received.

There is no expectation that you tell your entire story in one meeting. The first few consultations may involve developing a broader understanding of your present circumstances, relevant history, relationships and support system.

4. Continuing

If we agree to work together, we will discuss the likely focus and frequency of consultations. Some people seek short-term support around a particular difficulty, while others benefit from longer-term psychotherapy to understand enduring emotional or relationship patterns.

The arrangement is reviewed as the work develops.

Frequency

Many people begin with weekly consultations because regularity helps the work develop. Sessions may also be arranged differently according to the person’s needs, the purpose of the consultation and relevant clinical considerations.

Frequency is discussed together and can be reviewed over time.
