CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST
How I think about psychological work
My approach is attentive, exploratory and informed by the particular circumstances of each person. I listen for what is being said, what may be difficult to say and the patterns that emerge over time. The aim is not simply to provide advice, but to create a fuller understanding from which meaningful change may become possible.
My clinical experience includes inpatient and outpatient services, a specialised psychiatric day clinic in Johannesburg and its adolescent programme. I have worked with adults, children and adolescents experiencing a range of emotional, relational and psychological difficulties. I also have experience in programmes where group work and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy-informed principles formed part of the wider treatment setting.
Working across cultures
A significant part of my work has involved relationships, identity, sexuality, race, belonging and the psychological experience of living between different environments. Family, culture, language, social position, professional responsibility and personal history can all shape how someone experiences themselves and how they are recognised by others.
Broader areas of practice
Alongside individual clinical work, I have supported parents, facilitated reflective groups and trauma debriefing, supervised developing mental-health professionals, worked with schools around learners’ emotional, behavioural and learning difficulties, and contributed to psychologically informed work with organisations.
My work is concerned not only with psychological distress, but with the ways people understand themselves within relationships, families, cultures and working lives. This has led naturally to work with parents, internationally mobile people, leaders and organisations alongside individual psychotherapy.
