LEADERS & ORGANISATIONS

The Psychology of Responsibility

The more responsibility someone carries, the fewer places there may be in which they can speak without having to manage the consequences of what they say.

Senior professional life can involve authority, uncertainty, difficult relationships, competing expectations, consequential decisions and a professional identity that increasingly occupies the rest of one’s life.

I offer confidential psychological consultation to leaders and senior professionals who want somewhere to think beyond performance alone.

A different kind of professional conversation

This is not about teaching someone how to lead. It is an opportunity to think psychologically about the person doing the leading and the relationships and systems in which they work.

Conversations may involve sustained responsibility and pressure; difficult professional relationships; authority and conflict; recurring interpersonal patterns; promotion and changing professional identity; consequential decisions; isolation in senior roles; succession; leaving or selling a business; career transition or retirement; and the effect of professional life on relationships and family.

When achievement doesn’t answer the question

Sometimes uncertainty emerges not because something has gone wrong, but after something has gone well. A promotion, professional success, financial security or reaching a long-sought goal can raise questions that achievement itself cannot answer.

Is this the life I actually want?

Psychological consultation can provide a confidential space in which to consider questions of identity, ambition, responsibility, relationships and what may come next.

Psychologically informed work with organisations

I also work with organisations through psychologically informed workshops, facilitated conversations and programmes concerned with the human dimensions of working life.

Areas may include psychological wellbeing at work; pressure and sustainable working; transitions and organisational change; relationships and conflict at work; leadership and responsibility; belonging and working across cultures; communication under pressure; internationally mobile employees; relocation and accompanying partners or families; and returning home after an international assignment.

Workshops & programmes

Workshops can be developed around the particular needs of an organisation rather than offered as fixed, generic programmes.

They may take the form of a focused workshop, facilitated discussion, leadership reflection session or a series addressing a particular psychological theme within working life.
